The Power of Matched Funding

A key strength of this program is the partnership between the Foundation and its local members. Many grants are matched dollar-for-dollar by the applying Lodge, often doubling the community impact as local Elks and Royal Purple Elks raise funds for causes in their communities.

The Foundation’s “People Helping People” mission is delivered through three grant streams:

  1. General Assistance Grants: Support community projects through matched funding of up to $5,000 for initiatives such as hospital equipment, seniors’ centres, and playgrounds. Larger projects are approved annually by the membership at the annual general meeting.
  2. Personal Assistance Grants: Help individuals facing medical crises. Applications are reviewed by the Lodge Charities Chair and require medical documentation, with funds paid directly to service providers for accountability.
  3. Disaster Assistance Grants: Provide immediate support to families who lose their homes to fire through a rapid-response $500 cheque initiated by a single call from a Lodge to the Foundation office.

Mighty Lil Elk Program

The Mighty Lil’ Elk Hospital Bag Program was created in 2023 to support families facing unexpected pediatric medical emergencies across Alberta. These bags are distributed to regional hospitals for parents and caregivers who are suddenly transferred with their child to a larger medical centre, often without time to pack personal belongings or make arrangements before leaving home.

Each bag is thoughtfully prepared to help families through the first 24 hours of their hospital stay by providing essential hygiene items, comfort supplies, and practical necessities such as a universal phone charger to help them stay
connected with loved ones during a stressful time.

Since the launch of the program, the Mighty Lil’ Elk initiative has distributed more than 1500 hospital survival bags to regional hospitals throughout Alberta, helping ease the burden on families when they need support the most.

Tabs For Tots

Collect and save the “tab” off of beverage cans as well as other recyclable materials.

Our program collects and sells tabs and other metal for scrap. The funds collected are allocated for helping local hospitals. Tabs are being collected in communities in a number of different ways by involving schools, day cares and local trades donating materials after a job has been completed. AND – you do not have to belong to an Elks or Royal Purple Elks Lodge to help!!

Since its inception, the program has collected 58,266 pounds of tabs, 123,876 pounds of other metals..

As a result, the Tabs for Tots program has been able to donate $185,961.67 worth of pediatric care and equipment for regional hospitals and healthcare units. The program helps deliver equipment to delivery rooms, nurseries, and pediatric
wards.
